Our tour through the historical city of Sefrou included a police escort: along the main road, into the Jewish cemetery, through the medina (old city) — everywhere. But why?
We were two unassuming tourists, accompanied by a licensed local guide and a professional driver, the same configuration as everywhere else we visited. And while police checkpoints are numerous in Morocco (again, why?), this was the only spot where we were escorted.
Naturally, I asked around.
Everyone agreed that the place wasn’t dangerous. Some locals hedged with the advice that even when things are safe it’s still better not to take a chance. Others insisted that the police were there only to make sure we felt safe, in addition to being safe. A third opinion was that our visit to the Jewish cemetery triggered the escort, as if this were an explanation.
I still don’t know.
