What in the world is a wild boar doing walking down a city sidewalk built for people? Or maybe the question ought to be: What’s a city sidewalk for people doing where wild boar live?
I took this shot in Haifa, Israel. For years I’d heard rumors of these animals, but it wasn’t until today that I saw one.
They used to limit their appearances mostly to uninhabited valleys. Then during COVID they ventured out more broadly. And despite some steps taken by the city of Haifa, they’re still here. Photojournalist and documentarian Yair Gil has been tracking them, and he took me to a spot they frequent. We waited almost two hours, but they finally appeared.
Here are two more shots. The first shows more of the urban environment (though not as much as I wanted). I like the second mostly for the shadows.
