A magical collection of “luminous ovoids” transforms Hong Kong’s urban landscape at dusk, carving a peaceful, happy, otherworldly retreat into the space between the busy harbor and the even busier skyscrapers that define Hong Kong Island. Here time slows. Adults frolic. Smiles abound. And reality and make-believe mingle.
The exhibition is courtesy of teamLab, the international art collective known for creating ultra-instagrammable settings. Here they’ve hit a home run. And the experience itself far exceeds even the marvelous photos that it prompts. And what of the term “luminous ovoids”? It’s either a translation gaffe or masterful turn of phrase that underscores the extraordinary within the ordinary.
Beyond the sheer awe of the setting lies a deeper message. Called “Continuous,” the installation reflects “resonating life which continues to stand” even after… After what? Hardship? Onslaught? Tribulations? Defeat? No matter what, each egg “rises back up on its own and shines brightly.”
Perhaps Hong Kongers need that image of resilience as they march through 2024. Perhaps we all do.
