But why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were two unassuming tourists, accompanied by a licensed local guide and a professional driver, the same configuration as everywhere else we visited.  And while police checkpoints are numerous in Morocco (again, why?), this was the only spot where we were escorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Naturally, I asked around. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everyone agreed that the place wasn&#8217;t dangerous.  Some locals hedged with the advice that even when things are safe it&#8217;s still better not to take a chance. Others insisted that the police were there only to make sure we <em>felt<\/em> safe, in addition to being safe.
