{"id":450,"date":"2023-03-14T12:43:22","date_gmt":"2023-03-14T12:43:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/joelmhoffman.com\/Human-Stories\/?p=450"},"modified":"2023-03-14T12:51:51","modified_gmt":"2023-03-14T12:51:51","slug":"the-girl-carrying-water","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/joelmhoffman.com\/Human-Stories\/postcards\/the-girl-carrying-water\/","title":{"rendered":"The Girl Carrying Water"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>While waiting for a second <a href=\"https:\/\/joelmhoffman.com\/Human-Stories\/postcards\/rajaji-national-park\/\">safari run at Rajaji<\/a> in a village outside Dehradun, India, I noticed a girl maybe 15 years old carrying two buckets of water across a road.<\/p>\n<p>It was around noon.  I was enjoying some light snacks and tea after a morning of leisure.  As I sat, I saw the girl return for another trip.  And another.  And another.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pullQuoteRight pullQuote\">I bet she was happy she had water, my friend said.<\/div>\n<p>Though it was a school day, she wasn&#8217;t in school.  Rather, I assume she was gathering water from some remote source. Perhaps for her house, which may have lacked running water. Or maybe for livestock. Or for cement.<\/p>\n<p>That evening, I asked a friend about the girl.  &#8220;Do you think she minded doing all that work?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No,&#8221; my friend replied.  &#8220;I bet she was happy she had water.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What do you think? It&#8217;s a harder question than it might seem, because my friend &#8212; versed in local culture &#8212; might be right. The girl might be happily enjoying her life.  If so, does that make it okay when it otherwise might not be? Or is happiness not the question here?<\/p>\n<p>Again, what do you think?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Is it okay that this girl spent her day carrying water instead of going to school?
